The lure of the lucre

What is it about money that makes people go mad? Regular people like you and me suddenly get their priorities all skewed just for the sake of making a few bucks. People who are alright the rest of the time just seem to do these weird things when the stakes are a few thousand rupees.

People who go out of their way to help their friends, who talk about making a difference to the society and the lives of the people they are friends with, go awry when some money is waved in front of their noses.

Now this is not to say that I don’t want any money at all, but then I feel and have always felt that money should be treated as a necessary evil. It is necessary, but only to the extent that one should be able to have a basic, or maybe even the next level of comfortable sustenance. Things should never reach a point where one is willing to compromise on his ideals, principles, just because that would result in a few thousand rupees coming their way.

People go to great lengths and take the risk of getting caught and the risk of losing face in front of friends, and people they care for, just because there is some money involved. They put relationships cultivated over long periods of time, which has taken a lot of efforts on their part, just coz there is money at the other end. I really dunno if money is worth that much.

Due to various constraints, I probably am not able to put more facts in this post, and am restricting myself to expressing my opinions. That is simply coz the people that I’m talking about are real good friends of mine, and will remain good friends of mine hopefully for a long time to come. However, some of the shitty things that they’ve been doing recently, just for some paltry amounts of money, have disturbed me so much that I just had to post this. And the sad part is that I don’t wanna confront them with this issue, coz it simply seems to trivial to jeopardize good friendships.

Dilbert-speak: When people want to hear back from you, they generally spell their name and repeat their phone number twice or thrice, and maybe even follow up with an e-mail. But when people never want to hear your voice as long as they live, you get the alien-auctioneer mumble on the phone, which sounds like hsitfrninitayfreeohfreayh.
