Law against women working at night

Law against Women working at Night – Oh Lawd!

What was Iqbal Ansari thinking??

If you are wondering who I am talking about, it is Bangalore’s State Labour Minister when he and other ministers passed the law banning night shifts for women. Women banned from working between 8.00 pm and 6.00 am, an exception being given to IT, ITES and essential services.

Whaa… How come … why… In Bangalore did you say? … We are in the 21st century aren’t we?

His argument was that it is in the best interest of women that this law is being enforced and if women aren’t out working in the late hours of the night it would be better for their safety and security. If this was his argument, what about the safety and security of the women working in IT/ITES and essential services? Why not instead tighten security, so all women feel safe to travel/work in the nights?

Ansari’s comments and subsequent statements defending the decision on the ban drew flak from various trade bodies, progressive and women organisations. Even a few of his own Cabinet colleagues, who passed the law (I am now certain they were definitely sleeping in the Vidana Soudha), later on criticised the Minister for creating an unnecessary controversy when questioned by the media.

After all the furore this law created, the Minister has backed out and passed an Ordinance to scrap this law.

Why did he start it in the first place? Clear case of foot in mouth, I would think!
